  • New paper: Drought effects on Sierra Meadows Sep 10, 2014

    The first chapter of Chelsea Arnold's dissertation was published today in the open-access journal Plos ONE (Vol 9, N. 9, P e106058). The reports that early spring, severe frost events, and drought induce rapid carbon loss in high elevation meadows in Sierras. Chelsea was co-advised by Asmeret Asefaw Berhe and Teamrat A. Ghezzehei.

  • New paper: Solving two problems at once Sep 8, 2014


    Our paper that describes a solution to the problem of excess waste biomass and high nutrient load of dairy effluents was published in the open-access journal Solid Earth (Vol 5, P 953-962). The paper was co-authored by Asmeret Asefaw Berhe and Deoyani Sarkhot, a former postdoc in Asmeret's lab.


  • Jamie Sweet accepted to graduate studies at LMU Aug 24, 2014

    Former lab member Jamie Sweet, who conducted research in our group as a CAMP fellow, was accepted this week to the Civil Engineering and Environmental Science Graduate Program at Loyola Marymount University. Jamie will start her MSE study in Fall 2014.

  • Yosemite field work July-Aug, 2014


    Yosemite REU student Ang Diku Sherpa joined our lab this summer to conducted research at Dana Meadows. Diku's research was concerned with the role of buried tephra layer on below ground respiration.

    The UC Merced Center for Humanities selected "Water" to be the research theme for 2015-2017. This theme was proposed by Kevin Dawson and Teamrat A. Ghezzehei.



  • Graduation: Jamie Sweet May 12, 2014

    Jamie Sweet, a recent lab assistant in our group and CAMP fellow is graduating this year with BS in Environmental Engineering. Jamie helped former PhD student Dr. Ammar Albalasmeh with his dissertation experiments. Jamie is selected to be a student speaker at this year's commencement ceremony.

    Chelsea successfully defended her dissertation: Coupled hydrological and biogeochemical dynamics in high elevation meadows: thresholds, resiliency and change. Chelsea was co-advised by Asmeret Asefaw Berhe and Teamrat A. Ghezzehei.

    We received a new grant from NSF to study effect of low-intensity fire on soil structure and biogeochemical cycling. The work research will be done in collaboration with Co-PIs AA Berhe (UC Merced) and M. Berli (DRI)

  • PhD Assistantship in Environmental Systems Jan 2014

    One PhD assistantships is available for Fall 2014 in the Environmental Systems Graduate Group at University of California, Merced for work in a National Science Foundation funded project investigating the role of low-intensity fires on soil aggregation and effect of organic matter in aggregate stability during low-intensityfires.
