My research broadly relates to issues of political sociology and social movements. In my current work, I investigate the influence of changing social forces on the dynamics of democratic politics. I am particularly interested in how changes in political and social institutions—such as political parties, religion, science, and voluntary associations—have provided new linkages between citizens and the larger political process. Across a variety of political contexts, my research highlights the importance of these different institutions for the political mobilization of citizens.
