Sandwich Structure Optimization for Minimum Sound Transmission

There have been many strength and buckling related optimization studies of sandwich structures. Studies of special sandwich structures with optimal noise and vibration isolation properties are sparse. This project proposes an optimization study of sandwich structures for the best noise isolation. The results of this project will reduce the acoustic fatigue of the passengers and pilots in long distance flights. The objectives of the project are 1) to develop a mathematical theory for minimum weight optimized design of sandwich structures for minimum sound transmission, and 2) to study special sandwich configurations suited for noise isolation and experimentally demonstrate the noise isolation performance of the optimized sandwich panels. The targeted applications of this research include noise abatement in aircraft and in buildings.

This project is supported by National Science Foundation.
