Arminius Vambery (1832-1913)

Armin Vambery is one of the more interesting figures among those colorful 19th century souls who have today been labelled "orientalists". A linguist, traveller, diplomat-spy and adventurer he was born a Hungarian Jew later disguising himself as a Muslim,  becoming a Christian and, in his latter days, embracing also the Baha'i religion after meeting the charismatic and patriarchal Baha'i leader `Abd al-Baha' (d. 1921).
