This two part lecture is an extremely important biographical  and bibliographical essay on the `strengths and weaknesses' of TKC.'s one time  instructor at a leading German University.

The Expositor  3rd Series Vol. IX (London: Hodder & Stoughton 1888)

This volume of the Expositor contains (opposite the opening title page) an `etched portrait of Rev. Professor Cheyne by H. Manesse'  (see the main page of this Website indexing the Expositor) as well as the editor Rev. W. Robertson. Nicoll's article `Professor Cheyne' pp. 55-63 (of The Expositor (3rd Series) 1889, pp. 55-63).

The Expositor  6thj Series Vol. IV  (London: Hodder & Stoughton 1904) contains the following article by TKC

  • 1904  `An Appeal For a Higher Exegesis' Vol. IX: 1-19. an article said by Cheyne to have been "Preached as a University sermon in St. Mary's Church, Oxford, October 25th 1903, but with the hope of reaching a wider audience".  This highly academic sermon contains some interesting statements relating to the North Arabian, `Jerahmeelite theory' championed by Cheyne as well, for example, as an affirmation of the now widely agreed upon `Kenite hypothesis': "the Israelites were living with a North Arabian tribe called the Kenites, they learned to worship the supreme deity of the Semitic peoples under a new name --Yahu or Yahwê" (p.13).
