Below is a list of corrections to known errors in the first printing of Shadish, Cook and Campbell (2002). The vast majority of them are corrections of typographical errors, misspellings, pagination errors, omission or duplication of words, and grammatical errors, or updating of a few references. However, a few substantive errors also exist. Hence, the errors are listed in two groupings, with the latter (substantive) errors first.  Corrections to the second printing follow this list.

We would appreciate readers calling to our attention any other errors in the book. Comments can be emailed to shadish@mail.psyc.memphis.edu.

Substantive Errors:

  1. Page 145, remove the vertical dashed line from the diagram on this page.
  2. Page 397, rule 3a under “Path Equations” paragraph, delete both occurrences of “exogenous”, and insert “directly” between “that” and “causes”, so that the rule should read “the path coefficient for the first variable that directly causes the endogenous variable, multiplied by the variable; plus”.
  3. Page 397, rule 3b under “Path Equations” paragraph, delete “exogenous”, and insert “directly” between “that” and “causes”, so that the rule should read “continuing this process for every variable that directly causes this particular endogenous variable until the last one is added to the equation; plus”.
  4. Page 431, line 5 from top, replace “D = 107” with “D = 75”.

Other Errors:

  1. Dedication/copyright page. On approximately 300 of the first copies printed, some copyright information was omitted. Below the dedication should appear the following: “Copyright © 2002 by Houghton Mifflin. All Rights Reserved”
  2. Page vii. Under the table of contents for chapter 5, line 6, change “Cohorts” to “Cohort”.
  3. Page 37, footnote 3, line 2, change “ramdomization” to “randomization”.
  4. Page 69, line 28, Cronbach and Meehl (1979) should be Cronbach and Meehl (1955).
  5. Page 137, Table 5.3, the diagram for the Cohort Control Group Design, the “X” in the diagram should be moved several spaces to the right to be lined up vertically with the remaining X’s in the table.

  7. Page 157, Table 5.2, the last line “Repeated Treatment” should be moved two spaces to the left so that it is aligned with the other entries immediately above it.
  8. Page 173, line 10 from the bottom, insert the word “nine” at  the end of this line so that the phrase reads “about a nine month delay”.
  9. Page 181, last word of line 21, replace “lost” with “less”.
  10. Page 194, insert “PKU” at the start of the label of the horizontal axis of the top graph, so it reads “PKU Screening Adopted in 1962”.

  16. Page 258, Table 8.1, there are several cases of misaligned “O”s. For (a) the pretest-posttest control group design, (b) the alternative-treatment design with pretest design, (c) the mulitiple treatments and controls with pretest design, and (d) a crossover design, the column’s of “O”s at the start of the diagrams should all be moved one column to the right to be aligned vertically with the second column of “O”s in the longitudinal design diagram. For the longitudinal design, both of the last two columns of “O”s should be moved one column to the left to be aligned vertically with the columns of Xs and Os in the crossover design.
