The ability to control and manipulate the magnetic properties of solid state systems has formed the basis of technological applications, such as information storage, for several decades. However, at the basis of the macroscopically evident magnetism observed in materials is a quantized unit of magnetic moment - the "spin" of an atom or electron. The study of this quantum aspect forms the basis of several emergent research fields such as spintronics and quantum information processing.
