Two books of poems in English, published under a single cover. Salinas muses on life, madness, literature, and his multifarious poetic personas. He brings Baudelairian spleen to California’s Central Valley lingering “in the café / where the last angel has left / unimpressed with the world” (84). The last section of Walking Behing the Spanish contains a group of poems devoted to Latin American and Spanish poets of the Spanish Civil War era. Other memorable poems in this collection include “My Father Is a Simple Man” and “I Am America,” a prime example of his “wrestling [with] the white ghost of literature” (105), Whitman in this case.
