On the last pages of the book, the author describes it as a novel based on the story of Eleonora Márquez, as written by José Montesinos (another character in the novel). She says: "This is not a book of literature, philosophy, or erudition. It is a simple book of sorrow. It is the story of a strong woman who fought for life and had no time to find love, which reached her too late, in a bitter and cruel manner!" (146, my translation). The story of Márquez as a female writer who defends Mexican Americans and is very progressive alternates with a sentimental and more conventional plot.

En la penúltima página, la autora describe su obra como novela basada en la historia de Eleonora Márquez, supuestamente escrita por José Montesinos (otro personaje de la novela), en los siguientes términos: “No es un libro de literatura, ni de filosofía, ni de erudición. Es el libro sencillo del dolor. Es la narración de la mujer fuerte, que luchando por la vida no tuvo tiempo de ver el amor, y éste llegó a ella muy tarde, muy amargo y muy cruel!” (146). La historia de Márquez como mujer escritora, avanzada en lo social y en su defensa de los méxicoamericanos, se combina con la trama sentimental de corte más convencional.
