Novela juvenil ambientada en los años de la Revolución Mexicana. Su protagonista-narradora, la joven Petra, tiene que guiar a su familia en su huida hacia el norte, atravesando el desierto hasta llegar a Piedras Negras, Coahuila, y desde ahí hasta los Estados Unidos.
