For new researchers at EDSL:


1) Key Access

Simply email Min (mlee49 at ucmerced.edu) asking for card access to the lab (rm. 080 and 080E at S&E2). Please allow about a week for the process.


2) Basic Safety Training

You also need to go through basic safety training. Among various trainings, the following three are mandatory.
  • Hazmat Spill Response with DOT Awareness (online)
  • Lab Safety – Fundamentals wo/o HazMat (online)
  • Fire Safety - Labs (off-line)
For the training, click here and follow the procedure listed in the page. In the webpage (the UC Learning Center), you can look up the three topics, register each of them and receive the registered trainings.


3) In the Lab

Lab Attire
You should wear long pants, closed-toed shoes and a lab coat at all times in the lab. When dealing with dangerous chemicals, additionally wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses, gloves, masks and face shield. Don't forget to label every bottle/vial with the full names of chemicals in them. Click here for detailed outfit guideline.

Chemical Storage/Waste
First of all, please see this Simi's movie about lab waste management.

All chemicals listed here here should be storaged separately and should not be drained. Chemicals also needs to be storaged in accordance to the chemical compatibility; incompatible chemicals are not to be mixed together. If unsure about storage and wasting process, please ask Min or other senior graduate students.


4) Access to the SCIF (if needed)

If you need to have an access to the Stem Cell Instrumentation Foundry (SCIF) for microscopes, spin coater, oven and/or other microfabrication equipment, click here for guideline.
